Historical Weekend Cooking

Weekend Cooking is a blog event that is hosted by Beth Fish Reads that can be about anything remotely related to cooking, recipes, cookbook review, etc.  I have taken this and amended my participation in it to related to historical cooking, foodways, cook books, or even recipes that are featured in historical novels.  Here you will find a collection of all of my Weekend Cooking entries and maybe something tasty to try at home!

Peppermint Brittle/Chocolate Kahlua Truffles - This is from the book Entertaining Newport Style and these sweets are perfect for Christmas parties.

Texas Style Lasagna - Recipe from Provisions & Politics: Recipes Honoring First Lady Sarah Childress Polk  - a take on lasagna.  Not sure this was made during the Polk's time, but he was known for annexing Texas!

Potatoes Dauphinois - From Entertaining Newport Style.  A decidedly French side dish served at a Vanderbilt formal French-themed dinner party.

The Chicken Curry Event - From Provisions & Politics and I have yet to find any connection for this to the Polks!

Tatiana's Buttermilk Pancakes with Grated Apple - From Tatiana's Table a companion book to correspond with The Bronze Horseman series by Paullina Simmons.  First attempt at pancakes from scratch!

Kielbasa Normandy - From Provisions & Politics - this was a recipe they used to represent Southern hospitality and intended as an appetizer, but I turned it into a meal!

Tatiana's Macaroni and Cheese - From Tatiana's Table - what is more American, other than maybe a cheeseburger?

Mini Blueberry Cheesecakes - From Entertaining Newport Style - I can just envision eating these under a tent in the garden...

Grilled Marinated Lime Chicken - From Provisions & Politics - a beautiful summer dish for grilling.

Baked Apples - From Dear America: The Winter of Red Snow - The Diary of Abigail Jane Stewart, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1777 - a simple fall treat.

Cucumber Sandwiches and Smoked Salmon Mousse on Toast Points - From Entertaining Newport Style - the perfect accompaniment for your next tea party.

Shepherd's Pie - From Tatiana's Table - A hearty and most delicious shepherd's pie I have had.

Review of Entertaining Newport Style - a delightful cookbook with recipes that would have been served at Newport Gilded Age parties, menus, and excellent info about the times.

Artichoke and Asiago Phyllo Cups - From Entertaining Newport Style and another great recipe for your garden or tea party.

Pumpkin Bread - From Old Fashioned Pumpkin Recipes - this is THE recipe I go to for pumpkin bread - come out perfectly tender inside and a light crunch on top!

War Cake - From Dear America: My Secret War - The World War II Diary of Madeline Beck, Long Island, New York, 1941 - an excellent lesson in war time rationing.  A few of my friends have used this in their classes they teach about WWII.

Vegetable Marrow Farci - From Last Dinner On The Titanic - Some really cool recipes in this book that come from the Titanic's kitchens or from luxury ships of the time.  This is a great meatless dish (basically a stuffed zucchini) and my husband asks for it over and over.

Martha Washington's Great Cake - From Dear America: The Winter of Red Snow - The Revolutionary War Diary of Abigail Jane Stewart, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1777 - I was obsessed with this cake that would use 40 eggs!  I didn't make this but the Mount Vernon Ladies Association did - I couldn't imagine using 40 eggs!

Review of Great Depression Cooking with Clara - A series of Youtube videos and a cook book.  Clara lived through the Great Depression and her son helped her record this history.

Chicken Fricassee, White - From Old Sturbridge Village Cooking, original recipe from The American Frugal Housewife - a quick, hearty dish for the weeknight.

Presidential Cookbooks I Want

New England Clam Chowder - From Mystic Seafood - I LOVE a good chowder and there were some excellent historic tidbits about the clam industry.

Roast Cod with Potato Horseradish Crust - From Mystic Seafood - pair it with a salad or grilled veggies and you have a quick dinner. And some info about the cod industry.

Edith Bolling Wilson's Tea Cakes - From The President Woodrow Wilson House website - mine didn't come out good, but I'm not sure if that was just me screwing it up or the recipe.  I would love if someone else made these and let me know!

Creamy Apple n' Squash Soup - From Old Fashioned Soups, Stew, and Chowders - a very different harvest time soup.

Easy Applesauce - From Old Fashioned Apple Recipes - Couldn't make a tastier, easier applesauce and there is an excellent graphic about what apples to use for all dishes.

Lobster Stock - From Mystic Seafood - I didn't actually make this base for my soup, but you can if you wish!

Lobster Bisque - From Mystic Seafood - use the Lobster Stock recipe above (or canned) to make this tasty soup.

Roasted Pork Tenderloin with Cider Sauce and Neeps & Tatties - From Outlander Kitchen blog - the pork was excellent, the neeps I could do without.

Roast Chicken - From The Culinary Lives of John and Abigail Adams - a simple and tasty roasted chicken.

Review of The Culinary Lives of John and Abigail Adams - simple New England cooking

Wycliffe Hotel Coffee Cake - From A Home for Christmas - a sweet breakfast cake that was served by a hotel in one of the short stories in this collection.

Collops of Rabbit with Champagne Wine - From Colonial Williamsburg Historic Foodways website - subbed in chicken for rabbit due to availability, but so, so good!

Elizabeth Hunter's Spiced Apple and Cranberry Cake - this cake smells SOOOOO good, I can't even explain it!

Butter Biscuits - These are delightfully tender biscuits perfect for dinner, dessert, or breakfast!

My Trip to Medieval Times - No cooking here, but I did enjoy fare in this Medieval setting and dinner show.

Eating My Way Through the Wizarding World of Harry Potter - No cooking here, but a taste of the literary Potter world!
