Suddenly Sunday – What I Learned at BEA and BBC

Suddenly Sunday is hosted by Confessions and Ramblings of a Muse in the Fog.

I decided instead of my usual Suddenly Sunday post, I would take this time to summarize the interesting things that I learned on my trip to BEA and BBC. But first a short, quick, summary of this week. I finished both Revolutionary Paul Revere by Joel L. Miller and Dancing for Degas by Kathryn Wagner – reviews will be upcoming this month. I am also starting Great Maria by Cecelia Holland.

Now on to what I learned!

At BEA:

• You will be overwhelmed and walk in endless circles – even when you made a game plan of what you want to see and at what time
• Approaching publishers as a group seemed to bring a more positive conversation and to be taken more seriously (Allie and I had better luck when talking to them together than we had previously on our own)
• Patience is a must – there will inevitably be long lines at everything you want to go to

At BBC:

• Stay away from the term “free books” because it makes you sound like you are just out to get swag
• When participating in weekly meme’s – put a twist on it to make it unique to you and your blog – also so other people will want to read it and not just see the same thing everywhere
• Make every effort to respond to comments
• Don’t overwhelm yourself
• You might find it useful to create a survey for your readers – to see who is reading your blog and possibly gear your content a different way

Misc:

• If you need directions in the city, a UPS man (or another delivery person) is a great resource!
• 5th Avenue divides East from West on the streets (thanks Allie, that helped A LOT!)
• I learned how to read a train schedule – they can be very confusing (but I caught all my connections!)
